Last semester, several classes of students had the opportunity to get hands-on with technology in a way that textbooks can’t offer. Thanks to a batch of recycled desktop computers from SBC Recycle in Beaverton, Oregon, dozens of students spent the day learning how to build, repair, and troubleshoot computers from the inside out.

“The students were engaged and excited to take them apart and learn more about the components. Being able to handle the components physically and see how it was put together and then take it all apart made a big difference in their understanding and was a great learning experience. I have two classes that participated in this activity and they all really enjoyed it!” -Technology Instructor

Instead of ending up in the landfill, these computers became powerful teaching tools. Students rolled up their sleeves, opened the cases, and explored each component.

They practiced installing memory, swapping hard drives, seating CPUs, and identifying non-working parts that could be replaced.

The lessons went beyond just building computers. Students learned the importance of grounding to prevent static discharge, how to read technical specifications for hardware compatibility, and how to safely recycle and repurpose older components.

By the end of the program, each class walked away with not only valuable technical repair skills but also a new appreciation for sustainability—why reusing and refurbishing technology is smarter than throwing it away. These sessions show the impact recycled electronics can have in education: inspiring the next generation of technicians, engineers, and problem-solvers while reducing e-waste at the same time.
